Weather Alert – Hurricane Bill to pass Montauk Point
August 21st, 2009For any anglers hitting the Long Island waters to fish this weekend, use extreme caution. The National Weather Service (NWS) has already posted High Surf Advisories for this weekend due to the approaching Hurrican Bill. What does that mean for us?
As of the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Hurrican Bill is not expected to make a U.S. landfall. Current weather models expect the eye of the storm to pass well east of Montauk Point. Although this storm is expected to remain off shore, High Surf Advisories have been posted for all southern facing waters until 6:00 PM Sunday evening. Wave heights of 8 – 12 ft are expected at shoreline locations with higher swells of 12 – 17 ft expected in the open waters. Minor coastal flooding and severe beach erosion is expected.
Along with the high seas and heavy surf, there is a high risk for rip currents. These currents can quickly sweep you off your feet and pull you out into the ocean. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shoreline and than towards the shore after escaping this current. Do not attempt to swim against the current as you will become tired and increase your risk of drowning.
The track of the storm may change and conditions may become worse than current forecast. Stay tuned to the weather if you plan on venturing out. For the latest Hurricane Bill updates, visit the National Hurricane Center website.
Stay safe!
