Blackfish or Tautog- Who? What? When? Where? How?
October 31st, 2008Blackfish
The Tautog, commonly referred to as the Blackfish, are quick bottom feeders. They are often found in the Canadian Maritime’s south to the Maryland-Virginia area. Blackfish are generally found in cooler waters, around 50 degrees. If you are after the Blackfish, be sure to hit the waters in the early Spring and Fall time. Blackfish are often considered a funny looking fish, having big lips and large teeth. See the picture above and we are sure you’ll agree. New York State does have a regulated season. For 2008, the first half of the season will run from October 1st until December 20th. The second half of the season is from January 7th until April 30th. According to New York States DEC site, the season has been shortened due to a decline in the Blackfish population.
Where to catch Blackfish:
Artificial or naturual reefs will hold Blackfish. You will find them near any of the bridges early in the season. In the ocean, rock formations or wrecks are popular spots for Blackfish to hide. Being that these fish are homebodies, it takes a little skill and knowledge to find them in open waters.
How to Catch them:
All forms of bait have landed a Blackfish. Primarily, crabs are the best bet. Any kind of crab will work but we recommend Green Crabs, Asian Crabs, and Jonah Crabs (White Crabs). If you are able to get a hold of Hermit Crabs, these are basically a sure bet. You may also use Clams to hook them up.
When:
Blackfish are prone to hang out in cooler water. The best time to fish for them is when the water is around 50 degrees. Spring and Fall are the best seasons. NYS 2008 Season for Blackfish runs from October 1st- December 20th and then again on January 7th- April 30th.
Limits:
The current 2008 limits have been reduced. New regulations limit the number of catches to 4 per day. Although this is down from 10 per day, the size limit will remain 14″.

please it is really becoming a mystery to me and my dad.. please tell me how or where i can purchase white legged crabs or white crabs.. i am from new rochelle and would really like to know..
Thanks for the question Jeffrey! Generally in our area we don’t start seeing them till the water gets a bit cooler, around another week or two. However, you may be able to find some if you try the tackle shops in Sheepshead Bay, as they get them earlier than us in Western Nassau.
