Tsunami AirWave Fishing Rod Review

May 6th, 2008

tsunami-logo-300-wide.jpg

We recently added the new AirWave rods to our inventory and we are GLAD we did, they have been VERY well received so far! We brought in the spinning rods, inshore rods, boat rods models and a variety of surf rods too.

Tsunami has created their very own high density blank that is light as a feather and surprisingly strong! They are fitted with Fuji’s Alconite guides, Fuji Seats, an aluminium gimbal, vinyl “diamond” grips on some models, grade A cork or Cork Tape on other models. These rods are VERY impressive for their prices… NO DOUBT! We’re building more and more custom rods with thes grips because they’re so durable and provide exceptional grip, even when wet and full of slop!

The boat rods resemble the newest style of “jiggin rods” that compare to the Shimano Trevala rods for example, with a somewhat slow but extremely strong action. What we love the weight of these rods… they weigh next to nothing and they’re strong like you can’t believe!

Like our review of the Tsunami AirWave Series, than hurry up and pick one of these up, we can hardly keep them on the sales floor!

These rods are junk,do not buy them,I have gone through 1 6’6 medium and 2 7 foot medium heavy’s,the tips break easy and two rods snapped completly in half for no apparent reason, they are garbage!

This Virginia fisherman loves his 8-17 lb spinning rod. It may become the only rod I need to use. Caught 16 stripers on a head boat Could have sold the rod for a bunch. Try one, they are strong and very sensitive also

    Alex,

Very sorry to hear about the broken rods, we’re a little surprised though. We have sold a BOATLOAD of the Airwaves… all over the country… and have seen VERY few of them come back. In fact, I can’t remember the last time we did have a problem with one.

If we can make a suggestion though… contact the company because their customer service is usually exceptional and they will most likely make good on those rods!

Here is the contact info for them:

Thanks Chuck, customer service was excellent, they sent me more rods and I haven’t had a problem since besides one rod at the end guide, the little cirlce inside the tip fell out,I called them up and they sent me another tip, they have a great feel, they are pretty light and strong but I have just had problems with them, thanks alot.

  7. Chuck says:

Glad to hear it worked out for you! They really are nice rods… glad to help!

  8. capt.john says:

i love the rod i was skeptical at first cause of its lightness but it took a 62 inch 53 pound red fish without a hitch

  9. Chuck says:

NICE! We’d love to see a picture of that fish!

    hello
    im new on this forum….

I have used the 7′ Air Wave boat rod H line 30-50 (8oz) for tog and cod with great success. I bought it as a backup rod but has now replaced rods costing 3 times as much. I pair it with a Tekota 500 or a Saltiga 30.

I also used the Airwave inshore 7′ MH rod to catch a 40# striped bass. I was originally snagging bunker which was inhaled by a cow on the retrieve.

  12. John G says:

    Guys
I most fish for stripers here in the North east. I was in a tackle store and saw a 6 foot 6 airwave jigging rod and was totally impressed with it. Very light and strong.
Is the boat rod the same weight and same design?

  13. Mikejr says:

Hey John, the jigging rods are a little faster than the boat rods. The only thing we could suggest would be match up the lure weights and action but realize that the boat rod will have a slightly slower taper. However, the boat rods are EXTREMELY light and EXTREMELY strong, they seem to work better with mono because of the high graphite content, if you choose to use braided line you might want to back off on your drag to achieve maximum performance.

weres a good place to get these rods

:cough, Causeway Bait & Tackle, cough: of course :-D The link is at the bottom of the review. You can see their full line of fishing rods by clicking my user name (Fishing Rods). Causeway has great pricing and their staff is extremely knowledgeable. This is my go to shop these days.

  16. Cidcho13 says:

seems a good rod, is it available for worldwide purchase?

  17. McD0705 says:

The airwaves are excellent rods. I have a 10′MH 2-6oz rods which are perfect for throwing lighter baits. However, I would say it’s comfort range is rather 1-3oz (maybe up to 3.5oz depending on the aerodynamics of the lure ur usin). The best thing about it is that I can cast it 8-10 hrs a day and be right back the next day. I wish they made 8′ or 9′ casting for inshore. I know a bunch of people who would buy a few each… i would.

  18. Alex S says:

I just bought an Air Wave 1102XH casting rod. I was actually looking for the Trophy model but they didn’t have the casting version. I can’t wait to try these out! I have the 1002 casting rod mated with a Penn 525Mag and it is saaweeeet! I just hope this Air Wave model follows suit. Air Waves are, in general, a bit more expensive than the Trophy.

  19. admin says:

Alex, congrats on your new purchase. We would love to hear back from you on the performance of your new Air Wave 1102XH. Would you mind emailing us or posting a follow up? We would be happy to feature your review on our blog.

  20. Gary Zera says:

I own four of these rods and love them for their feel. I may no longer buy them as I have had 3 tips break without any valid reason. I have had guides fail easily as well. Just yesterday I broke two tips on dogfish and guides on a snag. Product has potential but needs to improve. I must say the company stands behind the product with replacements.

  21. andrew says:

I have an airwave 11′ xh surf cast matched with a an abu 7000ict. I was really amazed at how light this rod and how well it casts. If your looking for a surf rod with great casting range and light weight this is definetly a great choice. This rod performs better than buddy’s st croix MOJO. I have a question? is the trophy or the airwave a better surf rod
