Striped Bass Report – Long Island South Shore – 9-10-08

September 10th, 2008

Striped Bass fishing has been a little slow, especially with the crazy weather we had from tropical storm Hanna. Even without the storm conditions we’re still seeing some really warm water temps throughout the bays and unfortunately we’re still in those “dog days of summer”.

We’ve heard of only a few fish caught locally, mostly from around the bridges. Some people have been clam chumming around the bridges and picking away at a few small fish but they are few and far between…. at best. Sounds like one or two fish coming from here and there on Live Eels but again… nothing consistent.

The best action we’ve heard about has been from the people that are plugging the back bays at first light and in the dark. Again, nothing great… mostly small fish but it sounds a little more reliable than anything else. 7″ Fin-S Fish and 7″ Slug-Go’s on lead heads have been producing around the bridges but the Bluefish have been terrorizing the plastics. There have been some smaller fish in Reynolds Channel on the same plastics as well as some on poppers and swimming plugs too. Chicken Scratch color Bombers and the Stillwater Smack-It poppers have been consistent in Reynolds as well as some of the other back bay creeks and channels.

With the cooler weather in the forecast, maybe we’ll see some improvement and once the peanut bunker and mullet start moving around we should see some promising changes.
