Finally, the snappers have arrived. Well, not quite. Snapper fishing around Long Island is always anticipated and they can never get into the bays soon enough. We have been reporting for a couple of weeks that the snappers were showing up but are still too small.

Although the reports on their size has been improving, they are still not large enough to swallow the bait. There have been some other reports indicating some bigger snapper are frolicking around that you may have a chance to hook up.

These baby blues are loads of fun for anglers of all ages. On the South Shore of Long Island, your best chances to see loads of action are in the creeks and canals on the north side of the bays. Some snapper hot spots are:

  • Bellmore Town Dock
  • Wantagh Park
  • Seaford Town Dock
  • John Burns Park

We will be rolling out “A Guide to Long Island Snapper Fishing” in the next few weeks so check back often. This article will contain information about snappers as well as the best fishing rods and lures to use, the top bait, and great snapper fishing spots.
