Snapper Fishing Report – Long island South Shore 8-11-08
August 11th, 2008It’s safe to say that Snapper fishing is in FULL SWING! They are definitely big enough to catch now, on bait as well as on lures. Some of the local “Hot Spots” seem to be Wantagh Park, Bellmore Town Dock and Jones Beach Piers (Parking Field 10). Typical of Snapper fishing in our area, any time around high tide is the best bet from shore and from a boat it doesn’t seem to matter much.
For those who like to fish with bait, Spearing is always hard to beat and small live Killies work well too… but they have to be small yet. Use a float and put your Snapper hook around 18 to 24″ below the float, add bait and maybe a pinch on sinker to help casting… or you can use a weighted float to get it out there. It’s kind of “meat and potatoes” fishing… simple, yet FUN. Don’t forget you can chum for the snappers too!! Most people don’t think about it but bunker chum is an AWESOME attractant for snappers and we sell a quart sized frozen chum that’s just perfect for a few hours on the pier!
As far as lures go, pretty much anything small and shiny is going to get them but some of the staple Snapper lures are the small (like 1/8 and 1/4 ounce) Kastmatser’s, Krokodile’s and Side Winder’s and the ALWAYS faithfull Fin Strike Snapper Popper’s!
These baby Bluefish are only going to get bigger and bigger from here out, so be prepared with extra hooks, floats and lures because once they get a little larger they can use those TEETH!

Great report. I can’t wait to get out there and start hooking some of these snappers. Can anyone post a top 5 or top 10 Hot Spot list as to where else to catch these?
