Long Island Fresh Water Fishing Update

April 9th, 2008

Considering that the fishing in the salt water hasn’t really started yet, the lakes and ponds have been producing some action for those who try. New York State has stocked a bunch of local ponds with Trout and the water is warming enough to catch some panfish and other types of fish as well. For the Trout, waxworms and nightcrawlers seem to be the better baits and if you wanted to cast with lures…. ANYTHING GOLD is the deal. Gold Kastmasters, Phoebe Spoons and Mepps have been the hot lures for the trout!

On a side note… we have MANY customers who love to use Killies in the fresh water and just to remind everyone… IT IS ILLEGAL!! The DEC has been patrolling the local ponds and enforcing this now, so beware!

I wonder why the gold is the hot lure…

Not exactly sure to be perfectly honest… but with NO DOUBT, Gold is the ticket around here!

fishing with live killies in fresh water is illegal??????? is there any live bait legal to fish with in fresh water?????

  4. Chuck Says:

Yes… you can fish with any “Natural” bait fish except live Trout and Largemouth Bass. There may be more to this but you would have to get the exact details from NYS DEC. Just do a Google search on “NYS Freshwater Fishing Regulations” and you’ll see it. It’s like reading War and Peace but that’s where it would be spelled out.

However, you can use live Perch, live panfish like Bluegills and Crappie’s, Golden Shiners and any “natural” minnows.

    Good Luck!
