The recent striped bass activity had set up some great expectation for Long Island anglers but the fish God’s did not seem to feel the same way. We received various reports from Jones Inlet and Fire Island as well as from the charter boats. Read the rest of the report now.The striper activity in Jones Inlet was a first light diamond jig bite. There were some birds early with a few bass and blues under them. The remainder of the day was a slow pick. The wire-liners had bass and blues right through the weekend. The afternoon bite was better than the morning for boats dragging white or green tubed umbrella rigs. The stripers caught were in the 25″ to 30″ class but the bluefish were slammers with some of these fish running up to 16 pounds!

The clam chumming in Jones Inlet was picky at best but it sounded like Fire Island Inlet had much better fishing. Speaking of Fire Island, boat sailing out of the inlet and making a left turn had really strong diamond jigging as there are still tons of sandeels all along the south shore. On Monday, Joe D. from the shop had a real picnic on the Island Princess out of Captree. They started out clam chumming early in the trip but after a report on the radio from offshore, they quickly changed gears and off to the east they went to do some jigging. Joe said the sky was black with birds and the bass bit quickly. All you had to do was fish a diamond jig with a tube to get immediate results. The bulk of the stripers were 26″ to 36″ inches and very few blues were caught. Joe managed to jig a 19 pounder and a 25 pounder to win the pool. Way to go Joe!

With a little help from mother nature, maybe some of these fish will either move west or hit hte beach so everyone can get in some action before we run out of time or weather.
