Fluke Fishing Report 6-22

June 22nd, 2010

Fluke fishing is still good but the keeper to short ratio is very high. In the bay the State boat channel between the Big M and the 3rd Wantagh is as good a place to start as any, but the boat traffic can be a problem there. Try fishing the back bays areas such as Merrick point, Rowboat alley or Massapequa cove with the” Irresistable Fluke Jigging Rig”, which is basically two small bucktails and a teaser rig on a spinning rod with line no heavier then 10lb. test. You can tip the hooks with either spearing or Berkley GULP Swimming Mullets. When trying this rig dont be affraid to fish shallow channel edges, by shallow I mean 3 to 4 ft. deep. On the oceanfront, theres plenty of fluke around the JI bouy again finding keepers has been a challenge. The water temps are on the rise and the dogfish have moved out of the reefs such as Hempstead, Macalister and Atlantic beach so fluking in those areas should see an upturn in quantity and quality.
