Grundens Foul Weather Gear Review
May 13th, 2008Grundens simply makes some of the best gear on the planet and they make products for just about every possible environment you can think of. You may have seen some of the Grundens gear on that television show called “Deadliest Catch” that airs on The Discovery Channel. These guys fish for Alaskan King Crab in the Bearing Sea…. IN THE DEAD OF WINTER…. you think they need good gear? HOLY COW… Watch the show sometime, the conditions that these people “work” in is nuts, but look what ALL of them are wearing…. yup, Grundens.
A few of the basic things to consider when buying rain gear are the type of conditions, and how often you’re going to need them. For example, the average once or twice a month fisherman may not need the heavier duty gear, especially if they only fish “in season” (basically April through November in our area) but party boat mates and commercial fisherman are on the water every day, all year. Do you get out on the water when the weather is a little rotten? Is it cold where you’re going to be? Is it windy? When I was younger I loved to fish in the rotten weather… I had the whole bay to myself, the bad weather tends to keep most people at home and it’s a pleasure to go fishing without the crowds. Besides, the fish don’t know it’s raining… they’re already wet…. badump bump… sorry for the corny fishing humor. We liked fished all year round too, even in the winter. Although we are in the Atlantic and NOT the Bearing Sea it still gets pretty cold and pretty rough on this ocean. Are you going to need them when the weather is nice, to stay clean for example? In our area, clam chumming is a great way to catch Striped Bass but it can be pretty messy and pretty smelly, so I like to wear my Grundens bottoms for this type of fishing just to keep from smelling like a rotten clam. By the way, my wife would like to send a sincere thanks to Grundens too… they cut down on laundry at home!
Just about everyone that I fish with, and work with, prefer the Hercules models. I would classify these as a medium duty line of products… not light weight, but certainly not heavy weight. The Model #16 Bib Pant and either the Model #40 or Model #44 top. The only difference between the two tops is that the #44 has the neoprene cuffs sewn in, to keep the water from running down your sleeves. These are with no doubt our most popular models in the shop, we probably sell three times the amount of these than other Grundens models… they’re just great. But, they’re a little heavy for me during hot summer months, so I also have a pair of the Nordan model #28 bottom and model #82 top. A lighter, but just as durable set of gear. One other top to consider is the model #34 top, another “medium” duty top except it’s a pull-over… no buttons. Our surf fishing customers like this top because when you’re waist deep in the water with waves crashing on top of you it tends to keep you dryer then anything with buttons.
OH… and just one more Grundens plug… they make some AWESOME sweatshirts, T-shirts. stickers and all kinds of ancillary products with the “Eat blah, blah,” logos on them. Again, you’ll see these all over that Deadliest Catch show, especially the Eat Crab logos!
What ever Grundens product you go with, you WILL be happy with it. This stuff is the real deal and you can’t go wrong. My #16’s are probably 15 years old and still in great shape!

Grundens does not make the #16 Bibs with a zipper, we do stock the Aquaskinz Albatross Bibs that have a zipper.
If you go to our home page and click “Shop by manufacturer” you’ll see Aquaskinz. I own a pair and love them. I also wrote a product review here on the Blog about them too!
Good Luck
