Fishing In Cabo San Lucas – Customer Submitted
September 2nd, 2008“Hi Guys,
Just thought that I would submit this article. I have a timeshare in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It is on the Pacific, near the famous Arch. The Pacific is really rough with a tremendous undertow. In order to Surf cast you need at least an 11 foot rod, although I am going to try a You must stand ten feet back on the beach to cast or you could be swept into the water. I purchased a Daiwa Emblem 5500 reel which has a wide spool and loaded it with 40 Lb. Power Pro. It casts like a dream. The lure that seemed to cast the greatest distance was a Deadly Dick Lure also purchased at Causeway. Add some wire in the front of the lure, so a toothy fish will not break you off. I caught lots of Sierra Mackerel (not Cero). In the Pacific they have a different species of Mackerel. They look like Spanish Mackerel in Florida, but not quite. I haven’t checked the pedigree. To catch these mackerel, you cast as far as you can into the surf. Sometimes they appear on top chasing sardines. The bait flees from the Mackerel by jumping out of the the water. If you reel the lure, make sure you reel fast, so the lure looks like a fleeing sardine and stays on top of the water. March is a great time for these fish in Cabo. Must be up at the crack of dawn or go out ln the late afternoon till sunset. You will see rays jumping, whales 40 feet of the beach and seals. The seals may put an end to the fishing for awhile. I have seen Mackerel in a breaking wave, after seals have gone by, trying to escape. They were not interested in feeding then. Attached is a picture oft my first Sierra. I realize that I look like I had one to many Margaritas, but it is Mexico and maybe, just maybe I did. Also attached are other pics of fish caught in Cabo on boats over several years. The Wahoo was caught in Bermuda. The first is the Sierra. These Mackerel make great Ceviche. Still trying for a Roosterfish off the beach.
Thanks for all your help over the years. Mike is my son, Rose, with the Dorado, is my wife.
