CODFISH REPORT – 02-11-09 – BEST FISHING IN 25 YEARS

February 11th, 2009

Yes, CODFISH… Montauk probably has the best Codfishing we’ve had around here in 25 years! For example, the Viking boat had 80 people last week and put OVER 1000 FISH IN THE BOAT! IT IS RED HOT!!…

We’ve had MANY customers in here lately, who have made a trip out to Montauk to get in on this fishing. If you EVER wanted to do some quality Codfishing… DO NOT WAIT… JUST GO! Sounds like the boats are all reservation only, and filling up quickly so make sure to call ahead. At the bottom of this post, we’ll put a couple links to the boats that have been sailing.

Joe and Danny, from the shop made a trip on the Miss Montauk on Monday (02/09) and LUMPED EM UP! Between the two of them they had around 30 fish and they were ALL quality fish between 8 and 15 pounds. Danny stated that “if you think you needed to measure it, it simply went back”. They fished with jigs and teasers all day, and never put on a piece of bait but those that DID fish bait caught well too. According to both Joe and Danny, it seemed like the bigger fish were coming on the jigs but the bait fished hard on the bottom produced some ling in the mix too. Sounds like 8 ounce diamnond jigs were all they needed along with Pink, White/Pink and plain white teasers ALL did the trick. Also, many plastic teasers like Gotcha twister tails, Gulp Swimming Mullets, and Gulp Sandeels worked quite well too.

BOTH Joe and Danny wanted to compliment the Captain and Crew of the Miss Montauk as well. Considering that us Causeway Crew guys are all ex- captains and mates they said the service on the Miss Montauk was exceptional… old school, “how can I help you” type crew. They said that it was the best service they have seen on a party boat in many years. Kudos guys… THAT is how it is SUPPOSED TO BE!! They said the guys were right there with a gaff when you had a fish to the boat, managing the tangles and helping everyone to stay rigged up and effective!

We have been selling the Vike Jigs and all kings of Diamond jigs, and teasers, faster then we can get them but we’re trying as best we can to get more!

A few recommended rods would be 7 footers like the St. Croix SWC 70 MHF, Lamiglas BL 7040, Tsunami TSTBC 701XH, Ugly Stik BWB 1140 7′, Ugly Stil BWB 1120 8′ and Lamiglas TFX 7050 CT… among any other rod you could fish 8 to 12 ounces on.

For reels… something that could accommodate 30 to 40 pound mono and/or 50 pound braid like Power Pro or Sufix Performance Braid for example. The Shimano TEK600, a 300 series Newell, Penn Jigmaster, Daiwa Saltsit 50 and even the Shimano TLD 20/40S… all decent reels that would do the job just fine.

Here are some of the boats that have been sailing out of Montauk:

The Viking Fleet

Miss Montauk.

The Rosie (normally out of Moriches, but temporarily sailing out of Montauk).

Captain Mark

Nice Day Too

GO GET EM!!!!

Unbelievable! 1,000 codfish?? I need to get on the horn and get on a boat out there. Have any fish moved further west? How far off Montauk were they catching them?

  2. Chuck says:

Sounds like there are some fish as far west as Shinnecock. The Shinnecock Star has been reporting some decent fishing but the Rosie, from Moriches even took the boat to Montauk for this fishing.

If you’re looking to get out… GO TO MONTAUK… don’t even bother looking back West!
