Top Ten Fluke Fishing Spots for Long Island

May 8th, 2008

With Fluke season opening on May 15th, we figured we would help you narrow down the places to start the season off. So here they are, in no particular order, the ten most popular Fluking spots in The Long Island bay areas.

1 - Reynolds Channel, especially early in the season. Anywhere from the town marina on the West side of the Point Lookout bridge towards the inlet. Historically one of the best places to catch a big one early in the year!

2 - Reynolds Channel, in front of the Lido golf course. There are a few nice holes in that area… right in front of the golf course.

3 - Swift Creek, the southern end especially, across from the bay houses.

4 - Merrick Bay, the western portion in particular has a nice hole just as the channel bends up to the north… right on the corner!

5- The Inlets- Bebs Inlet, Jones Inlet, and Fire Island Inlet of course, although the eastern side of the inlet seems to hold more Fluke than the western side.

6 - The “S” turn in Haunts Creek. This is a tight spot to fish but that’s what makes it so good. The channel narrows significantly in there and you’ll find deeper water right up to the marsh bank. The only trouble with this spot is that the boat traffic can be a problem. Fish this spot EARLY in the mornings, when boat traffic is minimal!

7 - Four Corners, in Seaford. Again, a tight spot to fish but this can be very productive!

8 - Massapequa Cove, east side. There are a few nice holes on the east side of the cove and this can be a nice spot to fish in the heat of the summer!

9 - State Channel, just east of the big Meadowbrook bridge. On the very north side of the channel you’ll find swift currents and a big drop-off about 100 yards from the bridge.

10 - East side of the second Wantagh bridge. On the south side of the channel, up to the point. Right on that corner is a nice deep hole with some moderate current… fish that whole side… right through the hole!

There you have it…. now it’s up to YOU to put them in the boat!

Top Ten Striped Bass Spots

April 8th, 2008

Well, here it is… as requested… the Top Ten Striped Bass Spots in our area! In no particular order, these are the most popular areas to fish for Stripers, no matter if you’re plugging, chunking, clam chumming or using eels.

1- The West Bar, in the inlet.

2- The East Bar, in the inlet.

3- The Big Meadowbrook bridge (aka, the third Meadowbrook)

4- The Swift Creek Bridges (this is the second Meadowbrook and / or the first Loop Parkway bridge).

5- Haunts Creek… the southern end towards the State Channel.

6- The third Wantagh (the southern most bridge)

7- The eastern entrance to Zachs Bay. On the south side of the State channel, there is a decent sized hole right at the entrance to Zachs.

8- Black Banks.

9- Reynold Channel, just east of the golf course.

10- Bulkhead Drain.

All of these spots produce fish, using just about ANY method. Some can vary depending on tides and wind but all in all, these are with no doubt, some of the most consistent areas in our bay!

Go get em!

Top Ten Flounder Hot Spots For Long Island

March 31st, 2008

Every year, people ask us what the “best Flounder spot” is… so here is the official Causeway TOP TEN list for the Flounder spots (not in any particular order though)!

We would love to see some comments on this… feel free!

1- Milburn Creek in Baldwin… way up the creek, at the Atlantic Ave. boat ramp.

2- South East side of the third Wanatgh bridge… typically a little later in the season though.

3- Squa Island area… again, later in the season but it used to be good right from the start!

4- Baldwin Bay… In the hole on the East side.

5- Massapequa Cove… In the hole on the East side in front of the brick house.

6- Coast Guard Station (Short Beach)… Typically the last place to catch them before they’re gone.

7- Hole In The Bay… West of the Loop Parkway off Cinder Creek.

8- Merrick Bay… In any of the deeper holes, especially the ones on the West side.

9- The cove next to the Jones Beach Piers… in the sticky mud.

10- The entrance to Hudson Canal in Freeport… right up against the bank on the East side.

Some of these spots were TOP SECRET when there were some Flounder in this bay and we are SO sad to see the decline of this fishery. I remember as a kid, anticipating opening day, getting out there with loads of clams and mussels, chum pots and of coarse… corn. Nothing better than fresh Flounder on the dinner table!!
