Robert Moses Filed 5 has been consistently producing fish for about a week now. Sounds like the Sandeels have shown up there and brought the Bass with them. Joe from the shop had over 40 fish the other day and a number of our customers have reported similar result. Considering the bait that has been around, tins have been the way to go. Diamond jigs and sandeel shaped lures like the Point Jude Pojee have been out producing just about everything else! Sounds like mostly small Bass and a few big Blues…. but plenty of action!!

Other than that, the surf has been rather quiet around here with scattered reports from other beaches. We did have a couple reports from people fishing with bait in Point Lookout and we weighed a 20 plus pounder for one person who also had 5 other shorts.

Seems like this warm weather isn’t helping the fall run but we’ll keep our ears open!!

Good news, things seem to be SLOWLY, but steadily, improving. It’s not great fishing yet but there have been more fish caught these past few days there have been in a number of weeks now. Sounds like it’s mostly bait fishing, fresh bunker, out front on the ocean beaches. Read the rest of this entry »

Locally, things are still a bit on the slow side but we ARE hearing of some schoolie sized fish here and there. I guess we could call it a slight improvement ove last week… but things have a way to go yet. We had a report this morning,  of a few fish caught over the weekend in Long Beach on plugs. There have also been a few small fish at Read the rest of this entry »

Wish we had more to report but in general it’s still pretty slow and to make matters worse it sounds like the surf has been a little messed up too, from that storm way down south.

We have had a couple of decent reports late last week with the slightly cooler weather but now that it has warmed up again it’s quiet. We’ve only heard of one or two fish every here and there from all over the place… nothing consistent unfortunately. Best bets right now seem to be plugging and MOVING. The people that have been walking different beaches and spots on the back side are picking a few fish. Bait fishing out front on the ocean beaches has been virtually non-existent.

We did hear of a few Weakfish caught from the piers at Captree State Park… about an hour before high tide. Doesn’t sound too consistent but it’s about all we’ve heard about.

BUT… sounds like Montauk was ON FIRE the past couple days. We spoke with Kadir (owner of Aquaskinz) today and he fished Browns on Sunday and said it was some of the BEST surf fishing he has seen in many years with fish from 10 to 30 pounds!!! He said the surf was littered with large Spearing and what looked like some Mullet. This is a GOOD SIGN and hopefully we’ll see some of that action back this way some time soon!!

No significant changes around here at least… still pretty slow on the ocean beaches. We’ve heard of one or two Bass here and there and a few Blues here and there as well but nothing consistent at any particular place… kind of scattered all about. The few fish we’ve heard about from out front have been on bait too, fresh bunker and fresh clams.

The back sides of the inlets, like West End 2, Democrat Point and the Sore Thumb have provided slightly more action than out front though. There have been a few schoolie Bass and some small Blues in the inlets at first light and it sounds like the people that are casting small lures have been able to out-fish the bait. Kastmaster’s, Charlie Graves tins, Point Jude tins and Bucktails are a good bet along with plastic swimmers like the Storm and Tsunami shad style baits. We’ve heard of a few fish caught on poppers too… like the Super Strike Little Neck and the Tsunami Talking Poppers.

Once the water temps begin to cool a bit and we get some bait moving around we should see some imrpovements, but till then it’s just a hunt and peck type deal!!

Wow… wish we had some better news but unfortunately things have been extremely slow along the Ocean beaches. Every couple of days we’ll here of a fish or two but that’s about it. This is one of the slowest times of the year for surf fishing though, so this isn’t very unusual but if you hunt around the back sides of some of the beaches there are a few fish to be caught.

Joe, from the shop, has been fishing around the Jones Beach piers in the evenings and has been catching some school sized Bass and some slammer Blues on Bomber plugs… Chicken Scratch especially. He fished a few nights ago with one of our customers “Ricky Laun” and Ricky managed a keeper Bass right from one of the piers, on a Storm 5″ Pearl Swim Shad. They reported seeing a load of bait around the piers in the evenings… which would explain why the Bass and Blues have been around there. This seems to be a pattern for all those that are stalking the back bays from shore… find the bait and you’ll find some fish.

We had a few reports from West End 2 as well… on the back side. A few people have fished there early in the morning from dark till first light, using Charlie Graves tins, Point Jude Tins and polaris style poppers like the Gibbs and Super Strike poppers and caught some small Bass and Blues there too.

Bottom line… fish in the back, not out front. There seems to be some baitfish roaming around the bays and if you can come across some of it you’re going to increase your chances of seeing some Bass and Blues.

Surf fishing around here continues to be pretty slow but for those who poke around the bay and the back sides of some of the beaches, there are some fish to be caught. Out front, there has been VERY little to talk about with a report coming in every here and there. Sounds like what little action there is has been on fresh Bunker and or clams though…  with no lure fishing to speak on the ocean beahces at least.

However, the back side of Jones Beach (parking field 10 and west End 2) have been giving up a few smaller Bass and some Bluefish as well. Most of what we’ve heard about has been on lures though… people that are walking the beaches and plugging their way around… not staying in any one particular area.

Joe, from the shop, fished with our customer Ricky Laun last night and Ricky had a 29″ Bass from the Pier on a 5″ Storm Shad in the Pearl color. Ricky also fished a few nights ago around the Wantagh bridges and had a 15 pound Bluefish and a few smaller ones on the Storm Shads as well.

Sounds like there have been quite a few Blues around the second and third Wantagh bridges at night and we’ve heard this from some of the boat fisherman too.

Our advice…. stay on the move…. don’t stay in any one particular place if there isn’t anything biting. Cover as much ground as you can this time of year and you’re bound to come across something going on somewhere.

Not too much to report unfortunately, what little we have heard about has been on bait… fresh Bunker to be specific. The beaches have been difficult to fish lately, between the crazy weather and the tremendous sweep/rip tides.

We did weigh one fish from Field 6, a 21 3/4 pounder for Domingos Martins caught on 7-24 on a chunk.

Other than that, it’s been one or two fish at each beach with an occasional Bluefish mixed in. Again, it’s been all bait with VERY little activity coming from any of the plug fishermen.

West End 2 still has a little action at first light with some schoolie Bass and small Blues on tins poppers but once the sun pops up, what little action there is, is OVER.

Mother Nature has put a damper on things for the past few days, between the tropical storm that passed  off-shore of us and these crazy thunderstorms there hasn’t been much activity on the beaches. There has been a big surf and a wicked sweep with lots of weed making it VERY difficult to keep a bait out.
But… before we had this weather we were hearing of a few fish caught here and there on bait. Fresh Bunker accounted for 99 % of what we heard and Tobay, Gilgo and Democrat Point were the more productive areas. Things should be different once this weather settles and we’ll post any new news.

West End 2 still has some activity with the Bluefish and some schoolie Bass at first light and occasionally at sunset. This is typical for that area in the height of the summer and can be one of the more consistent bites around here. First light… say like 4 AM to just after it gets light… usually gets things going around the inlet area and there has been a load of bait in the area too… small Butterfish, Anchovies, Spearing and some white bait. This is a good sign and we would recommend to anyone to at least make a stop at West End 2 if you’re going fishing.

Wish we had some better news…. we’ll post any new activity as we hear it!!

We want to hear YOUR Reports!! We would love to hear WHAT you caught, WHERE you caught it and HOW you caught it, so e-mail us your Fishing Reports and Pictures and we’ll post them here on the site!

It’s better! Recent reports from Field 6, Sore Thumb and Democrat Point have been better in the past few days. Although it’s been ALL on bait, the always reliable 747S rig and a piece of fresh bunker has been the ticket for almost everyone one of the recent reports.

Yesterday we had two reports of fish at Demo and two reports from Field 6. Sounds like Monday night saw some GREAT fishing at Field 6, but more to the east… where the old Field 9 used to be. We weighed one 20 pounder and the reports we had were of fish from 26″ to 40″… all on the Chunks! Sounds like the low water change has been the most productive on all the beaches… basically the end of the outgoing and the start of the incoming. Sounds like a heavy sweep in the surf too, so make sure to bring the big guns and plenty of lead!

Plug fishing has been practically non-existent, with only a few exceptions. Sounds like West End 2 at first light has been giving up a few small bass and a few Bluefish too. This is a typical mid-summer pattern for around here, but for the past few years it has been pretty reliable deal. Plastic swim baits, Bombers and Metal Lips are a good way to go while it’s still dark and once it gets just a little light out… Pencil Poppers, Little Neck Poppers, Surface Cruisers and even the Tsunami Poppers have been real good.

Joe, from the shop has been bouncing around the Jones Beach Piers and West End 2 in the evenings and says there is a TON of bait around… especially wherever there are lights on. Small Butterfish, Sardines and Spearing are crowding into the lights and he’s been spotting a few Bass, Bluefish and even an occasional Weakfish crashing the pods of bait. They have been throwing the Super Spreader cast net on the bait and live lining them in the lights…. he’s had a few hooked up but has only landed a couple of Blues so far. Joe likes the light tackle but he’s been getting spanked by the bigger Bass and Weakfish and breaking them off. He’s a determined individual and you watch… he’s going to bring a big Weakie to the scale any day now! He said a 4/0 or 5/0 Octopus Hook on a short Flourocarbon leader has been working well with the live bait!

Other than that, it’s been one fish here and one fish there. Long Beach has seen a couple fish on the Bunker… Point Lookout the same… the eastern parts of Robert Moses too…. just some random action.

Spoke with Bill Wetzel, Surf Guide, the other day and even he said things were a bit slow. He’s been concentrating on the Montauk surf and has had to WORK for every fish he’s caught in recent weeks.

It’s summer…. things typically drop off until we get some kind of weather change. Action will be on and off for a while.
