Snapper fishing is at the height of the season right now with reports of fish up 14″… that’s a big Snapper! ALL the usual creeks and canals are holding the Snappers and as always, try to fish around high tide. We have had a number of reports from Jones Beach Pier and the cove right next to the piers with some really great fishing. Sounds like Read the rest of this entry »

Fortunately that Snappers have been getting bigger and bigger and there is NO shortage of them! There are Snappers everywhere now and some of the better reports have been coming from Jones Beach Pier, the Point Lookout Pier, Wantagh Park and Seamans Neck Park.

Spearing and live Killies have been hard to beat for Read the rest of this entry »

Snapper fishing remains steady, with plenty of fish throughout the bay now. All the canals are holding Snappers, especially near high tide.

We have had a few recent reports from Wantagh Park, Norman Levy Park and from Jones Beach Piers… all with good results. Sounds like the Snappers are being caught on both bait and on lures.. just a matter of how you like to fish.

It’s been pretty hard to beat Spearing for bait but some people have had success with live killies too. For lures, Snapper Poppers are always a safe bet and the small Kastmaster’s and Sidewinders have been very reliable too.

Now that the Snappers are getting larger in size it’s probably a good idea to use the long shank Snapper Hooks to keep them from bniting your hooks off!!

Thankfully, the Snapper fishing remains consistent in this area. High tide, as usual, seems to be the more productive tide… especially in the way back bays and canals.

We had a few reports from Jones Beach Piers and from Wantagh Park, with good snapper fishing using Spearing and small live Killies. In fact, the people that have been bottom fishing have been complaining that the snappers keep steailing the baits!!

Many of our customers have reported plenty of snappers in the canals along the south shore as well. Basically, they are throughout the bay now and shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Good times to take the kids fishing before they start school again, although some of us can’t wait for school to start… LOL.

Any small shiny lures like Kastmaster’s and Sidewinders for example, will catch the snappers. Another great lure to use are the Fin Strike Snapper Poppers… can’t go wrong with these!!

As for bait rigs, the size 4 long shank Snapper Hook is a good way to go now… with the Snappers getting bigger by the day now, they’ll soon be able to bite the smaller snapper hooks off! We always recommend to people to put the hook 18 to 24 inches below the float… at least to start, then adjust the hook up or down depending on how they’re biting.

They’re getting BIGGER! Plenty of Snappers to be caught, especially around high tide… anywhere in the bay. Some of the more popular spots have been Wantagh Park, Jones Beach Piers, Norman Levy Pier and the Point Lookout Pier.

Spearing and small live Killies fished below a float with a small Snapper Hook have been the most reliable bait, as usual. For lures the Fin Strike Snapper Poppers have been producing well and any small spoon like the Kastmaster’s and Sidewinders will do the job quite well too.

Some people have even been using Sabiki style bait catching rigs and catching the Snappers 3, 4 and 5 at a time!! Just be carefull and remember that you can only keep 10 per person, per day!!

It’s safe to say that Snapper fishing is in FULL SWING! They are definitely big enough to catch now, on bait as well as on lures. Some of the local “Hot Spots” seem to be Wantagh Park, Bellmore Town Dock and Jones Beach Piers (Parking Field 10). Typical of Snapper fishing in our area, any time around high tide is the best bet from shore and from a boat it doesn’t seem to matter much.

For those who like to fish with bait, Spearing is always hard to beat and small live Killies work well too… but they have to be small yet. Use a float and put your Snapper hook around 18 to 24″ below the float, add bait and maybe a pinch on sinker to help casting… or you can use a weighted float to get it out there. It’s kind of “meat and potatoes” fishing… simple, yet FUN. Don’t forget you can chum for the snappers too!! Most people don’t think about it but bunker chum is an AWESOME attractant for snappers and we sell a quart sized frozen chum that’s just perfect for a few hours on the pier!

As far as lures go, pretty much anything small and shiny is going to get them but some of the staple Snapper lures are the small (like 1/8 and 1/4 ounce) Kastmatser’s, Krokodile’s and Side Winder’s and the ALWAYS faithfull Fin Strike Snapper Popper’s!

These baby Bluefish are only going to get bigger and bigger from here out, so be prepared with extra hooks, floats and lures because once they get a little larger they can use those TEETH!

Right now the Snapper fishing is pretty good and getting better by the day. Almost all of the action is concentrated on the north side of the bay. In our particular area (Wantagh Park, Seaford Town Dock, Seamans Neck Park and Florence Beach) the fish are anywhere from 4-9 inches and are big enough to hit Snapper Poppers, Acme Kastmasters, and small Johsnon Sprites. For those who prefer to fish with bait, small spearing on a medium shank, size 10 Snapper Hook approximately 18″ below a weighted casting float will do the trick. The key to this fishing is trying to fish an hour and a half to two hours before and after high water at each specific location. If high water happens to fall early in the morning or just before sunset the action will be faster!

They’re Here!!!

But, they are going to be hard to catch yet… they’re still pretty small. We’re hearing reports of the Snappers in most of the canals now and in many back bay creeks. We would say give them another week or two and they should be just right to start catching.

When they’re still small like this, try using small hooks like a size 8 for example… with small pieces of Spearing for bait. Another fun way to get them is by using small Sabiki type rigs… this way you can catch more than one at time too!

Don’t forget though… we’re only allowed to keep 10 per person, per day!!
