Crabbing is very strong in the bay at all local piers and dock either with Traps or Killie Rings with high water being best. From a boat most of the local flats at night will yield huge crab catches. Right now during the moon is a great time to try this. A spot light or lantern and a couples of nets is all that’s needed.

The HOT news right now is the offshore trolling bite that is going on, starting at about 25 miles offshore. There is a mix of Bluefin Tuna an occasional Yellowfin and Mahi Mahi. Most of it seems to be to the south and east of Jones and Fire island inlets. Position yourself to start fishing at first light around the Read the rest of this entry »

Shore bound anglers are starting to see some good triggerfish action on either side of Jones Inlet and Fire Island Inlet. Small Porgy hooks baited with sand worms, clam or squid will do the trick.

A 22 pound Long Island Striped Bass caught by Peter Makowski last week
With the great weather and fair fishing, anglers enjoyed some nice moments on the Long Island waters last week. Especially Peter Makowski who reeled in this 22 pound striper off Gilgo Beach. The striper action is picking up while some blacks and blues were found. Choose the report you’d like to read:

We are almost through with the crazy weather of the month of October. While the sometimes nasty weather conditions made it difficult for some anglers to fish exactly where they wanted to on a given tide or day, those who chose plan “B” instead of bailing out were often rewarded. This was especially true with bottom fishing. Read the rest of this entry »

The blackfish action has been very good toward the west in the bays and by the bridges. With the sea bass and porgy seasons closed, blackfishing is the only bottom fishing in town. Strong Winds the Culprit for Poor Fishing
With the strong easterly and westerly winds felt on the waters last week, the once hot fishing grounds of the Long Island South Shore went belly up. That is unless you put some time in working the bottoms. Read the rest of this entry »

Right now with the early fluke closure and the bass fishing not quite at full swing, the time is right for some fast jigging action in the inlet and bay. I was out the last few days and the action has been great. The blue fish are chasing spearing and herring from the 3rd Wantagh Bridge out to Jones Inlet. Look for the birds and keep your boat about a cast away from the activity and hang on. I have been using medium freshwater gear, 10 or 12 pound test line with a 30 or 40 pound leader with a snap on one end and a swivel on the other. 007’s, Deadly Dicks, small poppers will all work… at times it wont matter what you use!
An added bonus to this fishing is the appearance of Green Bonita and False Albacore, which seem to be concentrated from the mouth of Swift Creek across to the construction dock and south to the mouth of the inlet. The key to catching these speedsters is a super fast retrieve, a slender tin such as a Deadly Dick and being in the right place at the right time…the later requires some luck. These fish move extremely fast chasing baitfish so they can be elusive. If there were one *key factor* I would say getting out as early as possible and staying around the greatest concentration of baitfish and clean water. Personally I fish for these fish for the fun of it, however the Green Bonita are very good to eat if bled and iced. Greg

Bluefish have been hitting on the 007 Diamond Jig
As the Long Island fishing season steam rolls ahead, the activity and number of reports filing in aren’t as plenty. We have received a few reports indicating that the bluefish are still active. The weather is a likely culprit for the lack of activity. With Bill & Danny on their way, we hope to see the action pick up again. Continue reading for the bluefish and striped bass report.
