This is the time of year that can really wear on a fisherman. Bass and blackfish are closed and the water is not quite cold enough to fish for cod. What’s left? Herring or White perch.
The best place to try for herring is the Magnolia Pier in Long Beach. This has been a very consistent producer in the past. The Construction Dock in Jones Inlet can also be good. You don’t need bait to catch herring. A multi-hook “Sabiki Rig” weighted with a sinker or small diamond jig will do the trick.
White Perch can be caught in local tidal creeks. Cammon’s Pond or the Levy Pier in Merrick will produce, as well as Santapogue Creek or Avon Lake in Babylon. Use nitecrawlers fished on a float, small plastic grubs on jig heads, or small lures such as Phoebes or Kastmasters.
We have not had any reports as of yet, but if you’re anxious to get out of the house, give these fish a try. Good luck, and we’ll keep you posted.

Two beautiful white perch picked from the local ponds this week by Steve.
Steve was fishing the local ponds this week and reeled in 7 beautiful white perch. Steve is a regular customer and was using nitecrawlers as bait and left the fish biting. Nice job Steve!
A regular customer dropped in to let us know that he had good fishing for small stripers this morning at West End 2. The fish were taken on J-9 tins and A17 jigs with green tube. He added that this had been pretty steady for the entire week.
