Not a whole lot to report but of the blackfish that seemed to bite, the better activity was during the latter hours of this past Saturday and Sunday. Late in the game on Sunday we weighed in a 10 pound, 10 ounce blackfish for Richie Keough and a 10 pound, 12 ouncer for shop regular “Doc K.” Both fish were brought in live and were caught west of Jones Inlet on green crabs.
The recent striped bass activity had set up some great expectation for Long Island anglers but the fish God’s did not seem to feel the same way. A quick update from the South Shore waters of Long Island indicate that the blackfish are around in abundance at all of the local spots including Atlantic Beach Reef and Hempstead Reef. We were catching blackfish up to 7 1/2 pounds on green crabs.
We also saw stripers being caught just east of Jones Inlet in 40 feet of water while tolling green umbrella rigs. We weren’t sure on any sizes but there was definitely good activity.
Tobay Beach was red hot with striped bass action the other day. Our guess is that the fishing pretty much stinks with the Noreaster turning up 10′-18′ waves. Read the rest of this entry »
A 22 pound Long Island Striped Bass caught by Peter Makowski last week
With the great weather and fair fishing, anglers enjoyed some nice moments on the Long Island waters last week. Especially Peter Makowski who reeled in this 22 pound striper off Gilgo Beach.
