Looking for something to do in the middle of winter? Try the freshwater!
The most action right now seems to be at Bubbles Falls, on Sunrise Highway in Oakdale across from Connetquot River State Park. Apparently, the park has RELEASED around 4000 trout from the facility and naturally they end up in the spillway known as Bubbles Falls. From what we’ve been hearing the Trout have been ON THE FEED… Read the rest of this entry »

OH YEAH…. it’s STILL GOOD! Really good… especially when the weather cooperates.
First off, let us tell everyone that we are FULLY STOCKED with Cod Jigs, Cod Teasers, Cod Rigs, Pre-Snelled Cod Hooks and plenty of lead!
Every day the boats can get out, our customers are making their way to Montauk to get in on some of this unbelievable fishing. If you EVER wanted to catch a Cod, this is the time!
Recent reports have been coming from people fishing on the Miss Montauk, The Viking Fleet, the Rosie, the Nice Day Too and a few charter boats are sailing now as well. All good reports with people taking 10 to 20 KEEPER Cod home. Sounds like there are more keeper sized fish than shorts, with fish averaging 8 to 12 pounds… PERFECT eating sized fish! Like we said though, the weather can be an issue in February so the boats are not getting out every day, but when they are it has been exceptional. We’ve also heard that on days when it’s nasty, it can effect the fishing too… especially if you have an East wind, that tends to slow up the bite quite a bit. The fish are THERE, they are just hard to catch and they get a little lock-jaw. Like we mentioned in the last report too, CALL AHEAD and make reservations because the boats are PACKED and if you don’t have a reservation… you’re not getting on a boat.
Sounds like it’s still a mix of bait fishing and jigging… some days the bait is out-producing the jigs and some days it’s the opposite. Personally, I’ll take that jig fishing ANY DAY OF THE WEEK…. I LOVE IT!
Chris and Glenn from the shop fished on Tuesday with the Charter boat “50/50″ out of Montauk but they didn’t have the good weather. They made a few drifts on the Cod grounds South and South East of Block Island early in the morning but it was just too rough to fish. They made a few drops, picked a few fish and then bailed out… traveling back West to a few wrecks. Turns out they LUMPED UP the Seabass! They fished a few pieces in 160 to 180 feet of water and absolutely crushed the Seabass with most fish being keepers up to around 5 pounds.
Another recent report came in from Jeannine Hogan, who fished aboard her friends boat the “Ocean Outfitter” on 2/15. They had a spectacular day using Clams and beat up the Cod pretty good!
Pictured below is Jeannine with a 12 and a 13 pound Cod…. GOOD JOB Jeannine!!!

Joe, at Point Jude Lures has done it again… bringing back the wobblehead! For those of you who surf fish with eels… these things are THE DEAL! Have you ever tried to get an eel to the bottom in a ripping current, but couldn’t get it down quick enough to be “in the zone”????
Well, here is the answer… a 1 1/2 ounce head with a 6/0 hook that you can rig the live OR plastic eel on. In addition, not only will it help you get the bait to the bottom, but with the shape of this new head it will provide a sweet swimming action to the lure… especially for the plastic eels! These days, the Berkley Saltwater Powerbait Eels have become SOOOOO popular, this would be the IDEAL head to fish those with!
We have them in stock and they are certainly worth trying!

Causeway Bait and Tackle is committed to helping this cause and CAUSEWAY BAIT AND TACKLE WILL MATCH 20% OF ALL DONATIONS MADE ON OUR WEBSITE!
For those who are not familiar with this lawsuit, let us explain a little. New York State’s recreational fishermen have been getting KILLED with un-justified and un-fair fishing regulations over the past few years. Fluke and Porgies are probably the most financially important fisheries in our area and two of the hardest hit by these ridiculous regulations.
Now, to make matters worse… New York wants to implement a SALTWATER FISHING LICENSE! To be honest, we (Causeway Bait and Tackle) are not necessarily against a license… IF THE MONEY IS APPROPRIATED CORRECTLY. But, from what we’ve heard so far the money from the license would go in to the “General Fund”…. a technical way of saying that the saltwater fishing community won’t benefit from ANY of that funding.
Two groups, in particular, have been spearheading the projects to persuade fisheries managers to improve the way these species are managed, making the regulations a little more relaxed and beneficial to all. The New York Fishing Tackle and Trade Association (NYFTTA) and the United Boatmen of New York (UBNY) have been the driving force behind the recreational fishing community and OUR HAT’S ARE OFF TO THESE FOLKS!
CLICK HERE TO DONATE! Donations made on our website will be forwarded to NYFTTA, including our matching contributions.
Below are a number of links to some VERY important websites where you can find lots and lots of information regarding this mess.

ALL NEW Legend Surf Rods
COMING SOON to causewaybaitandtackle.com!
First thing we can say is…. NICE! These are some sweet new surf rods coming from St. Croix for the 2009 surf season. Our factory rep was recently in the shop to show us some of the new Legend Surf Rods and we are certainly impressed.
They are coming out with models from 7′ to 10′-6″ in spinning and conventional/casting models. St. Croix is using their revolutionary SC IV blank material making them one of the lightest surf rods on the market. Included in the new engineering is their IPC and ART technologies. For guides, they have incorporated Fuji’s new Alconite surf guides and SWEET new “X Grips”. We LOVE these grips and in fact, we have been building more and more custom surf rods with similar grips… everyone loves this stuff!
Another attractive feature with these new surf rods is the “Limited LIFE TIME Warranty”!!! One of the reasons we have been selling St. Croix rods for so long is because they are STILL made here in the USA and they have ALWAYS stood behind their products!
They are not cheap rods though, these are definately high end rods, geared toward the fishermen who plan on using them ALOT. They have been designed for the hard core conditions we often encounter here in the Northeast and if they can stand up here… they will survive anywhere!
The 10′ Medium, Moderate action would be an IDEAL spinning rod to fish lures in this area. Realistically, anything from 1 to 2 1/2 ounces would cast like a dream and there isn’t a Striped Bass around here that you couldn’t beach with that rod!!
We should have them in stock by late March / early April. Keep an eye on our website and our Fishing Blog for updates and we’ll certainly put up a post when the new models arrive!
