Striped Bass - 21lbs 12oz
July 30th, 2008Fluke - 11.52lbs Biggest of the year at Causeway
July 29th, 2008Fluke - 5lbs 9oz
July 28th, 2008This Report was recently e-mails to us from Floyd Goldman:
“Mitchell Goldman 8 years old of Bellmore - caught this 5lb. 9oz. Fluke on his dads boat, just outside the Jones Inlet on a Spro Bucktail and a long piece of squid - just like the guys at Causeway suggested!! He had many “shorts” and had a lot of action out there- but loved every minute of it!! Mitchell fishes every week but only keeps the doormats and there have been a lot!”
Surf Fishing Report - Long Island South Shore - 7-28-08
July 28th, 2008We did weigh one fish from Field 6, a 21 3/4 pounder for Domingos Martins caught on 7-24 on a chunk.
Other than that, it’s been one or two fish at each beach with an occasional Bluefish mixed in. Again, it’s been all bait with VERY little activity coming from any of the plug fishermen.
West End 2 still has a little action at first light with some schoolie Bass and small Blues on tins poppers but once the sun pops up, what little action there is, is OVER.
Striped Bass Report - Long Island South Shore - 7-28-08
July 28th, 2008Any bridge or structure in the bay should be holding fish and as long as there is current, incoming or outgoing, you have a shot at seeing some fish. Although with the waters temps as warm as they are, the later part of the incoming is a good bet… bringing some cooler water with it. Fishing at night, in the dark, can also to be to your advantage right now… again, cooler surface temps and less boat traffic.
We’ve had a couple reports of fish caught on Eels in this area too. Not a ton of fish, but action none the less. A couple of the “sharpies” are picking a few fish out of the back bays and there have been a few fish caught in the inlet area too.
Wish we had more exciting news but…. welcome to the DOG DAYS OF SUMMER.
If anything changes, we’ll post it!
Shimano Socorro Reels - Causeway Review of an ALL NEW Reel
July 28th, 2008Now In Stock, Shimano Socorro Spinning Reels. Choose from 4 sizes, all of which are $69.99.
We thought Shimano did a great job with these new reels. They would make a great reel for anyone needing a WATERPROOF drag… from Kayak fisherman to surf fisherman. The larger sized reels hold plenty of line for say a 9 or 10 foot rod too!
The Socorro reels feature graphite frames, side-plates and rotors, keeping the weight of the reel to a minimum and we all know that if you’re walking a beach all day, light is GOOD! Aluminum Spools and Shielded Ball Bearings will help keep the sand and salt from doing too much damage. And for those of you who fish with Braided lines especially… You should know that the Socorro is designed with the “Propulsion Line Management System”. It’s a prett cool concept from Shimano and in a nutshell they’ve designed the spool to minimize tangles and WIND KNOTS. We ALL HATE wind knots… particularly when you have a spool full of expensive braid!!! The design is supposed to allow the line to come off the spool in smaller, tighter wraps which causes less friction on the spool lip as well as your stripper guide. Reduced Friction = Longer Casts!
Here are some features:
- Propulsion Line Management System
- Propulsion Spool Lip
- Power Roller III
- S-Arm Cam
- Redesigned Bail Tip
- Lightweight Graphite Frame, Sideplate and Rotor
- Cold Forged Aluminum Spool
- Repairable Clicker
- 1+1 Shielded Stainless Steel Ball Bearings
- Varispeed Oscillation
- Super Stopper II
- Dyna-Balance
- Waterproof Drag
Causeway Opinion??? All in all we like this reel. It appears to be made quite well and definitely hard to beat for $69.99!
What’s YOUR Favorite Area To Fish For Striped Bass?
July 24th, 2008Charlie Graves Tins and Fluke Bullets - RE STOCKED!
July 24th, 2008However, Ralph was in the shop the other day and is slowly on the road to recovery. He also delivered a mess of Tins and Fluke Bullets… so we have a much larger stock now.
We wish you well Ralph…. Hurry up and GET BETTER…. We’re already getting low on J8’s!!!
Surf Fishing Report - Long Island South Shore - 7-24-08
July 24th, 2008But… before we had this weather we were hearing of a few fish caught here and there on bait. Fresh Bunker accounted for 99 % of what we heard and Tobay, Gilgo and Democrat Point were the more productive areas. Things should be different once this weather settles and we’ll post any new news.
West End 2 still has some activity with the Bluefish and some schoolie Bass at first light and occasionally at sunset. This is typical for that area in the height of the summer and can be one of the more consistent bites around here. First light… say like 4 AM to just after it gets light… usually gets things going around the inlet area and there has been a load of bait in the area too… small Butterfish, Anchovies, Spearing and some white bait. This is a good sign and we would recommend to anyone to at least make a stop at West End 2 if you’re going fishing.
Wish we had some better news…. we’ll post any new activity as we hear it!!

Frank Cini - 9 years old - 1 shortie on very light tackle, took the life out of him and he didn’t fish for the rest of the day

Fluke Fishing Reports - Long Island South Shore - 7-24-08
July 24th, 2008In the bays, the keepers are a little harder to come by, but they are there! The West side of Merrick bay, Black Banks, the North East side of the Big Meadowbrook and Rowboat Alley have been very active but we’ve also heard of a few fish on the very south end of Swift Creek.
Richie “Crazy Legs” fished the south side of the Hempstead Reef, for 12 keepers to 5 plus pounds… and of coarse a pile of shorts as well. They were using the Peruvian Smelts, large strip baits and whole Squid.
“Newsday Joe” also reported his “best day of Fluking in years” from that same area a couple days ago. Again, Peruvians, Spearing and Squid did the trick for them.
Glenn, from the shop, fished around the McAllister on Tuesday for a limit of Fluke and a mess of shorts.
Ken Lanning landed a 9 lb 12oz Fluke in Jones Inlet while Bass fishing on Tuesday!
The Berkley Gulp! Swimming Mullets have been selling off the shelves as fast as we can get it. Raffaele Feniello stopped by for some gear on Monday and asked about the Gulp! products. We recommended the 4″ Swimming Mullets to him and he took some…. skeptically. BUT here is a report he e-mailed to us the following day:
“Monday 7-12-2008, outgoing tide, 12:30pm to 5:00pm by the Coast Guard Station in Jones Inlet. Bait used: Berkley Gulp Alive 4″ Swimming Mullet in Pearl White tipped with Sand Eels.
Thanks to the advice of the great crew at Causeway Bait and Tackle to turning us onto Berkley’s Gulp Alive, we had a slaughter of a day.
Thanks guys,
The Per Loro Crew
